Jasberry Rice – the new ‘it’ superfood

Wondering what this new organic Jasberry rice is? Gram for gram, this wonder purple rice contains 2.8 times the antioxidants of blueberries. Jasberry rice is a variety of non-GMO rice that has resulted from decades of natural cross-breeding.
Its dark purple colour means that Jasberry rice contains a high dose of antioxidants called anthocyanins, making it a superfood. Anthocyanins are particularly powerful with fighting against inflammation, free radical damage and protecting against cell damage.

Neil explained that “in 2017, we first tried Cedele's food and wanted to partner with them as the food was so delicious and the ingredients so healthy that we knew there's a deep level of care that goes into the food at Cedele. After meeting its founder, Ms Cheng, we were even more impressed by how much she cares for not just the well-being of her consumers, but also the well-being of the supplier (in this case the farmers in Thailand). After that, it was an easy decision for us to partner with such a wonderful company.”
Siam Organic packages and distributes organic Jasberry rice internationally, connecting small-scale farmers in rural Thailand with global markets. At the same time, Siam Organic also works with impoverished farmers from the North-East of Thailand to alleviate their poverty, reduce farming input costs, increase yield and guarantee a higher purchase price, making rice farming a more sustainable livelihood.
Beginning with just 25 farmers in the first year, Siam Organic is now working with over 2,500 small-scale farmers, who have incomes that are on average 14 times higher compared to a typical Thai rice farmer. The farmers’ average daily income has risen from USD$0.40 to USD$5.80.
In recognition of its great social impact, Siam Organic recently beat more than 80 startups to come in first place at the US President Barack Obama’s 2016 Global Entrepreneurship Summit ‘Spark the Fire’ pitch competition in Silicon Valley. They were also the winners of the DBS-NUS Social Venture Challenge (SVCA), where they competed against over 1,000 social enterprises.

Where can I try Jasberry rice?
In Cedele’s All-Day-Dining outlets at Wheelock Place and Great World City, you can find two dishes on the menu containing Jasberry rice – the gluten free Mixed Mushroom Garlic Tossed Rice ($18++) and Pink Salmon & Miso Eggplant ($23++).
At the Bakery Cafes, we used to have a Black Rice Oat & Kale Salad using Jasberry rice, which will be brought back in March 2019. Look out for it then!

Jewelled Jasberry Rice Salad (Vegan & Gluten Free) Time: 30 minutes Serves: 5-6
Make a vegan and gluten free Jewelled Jasberry Rice Salad at home with our easy-to-follow recipe. Build your own healthy and delicious grain bowl by adding proteins such as creamy avocado, poached egg, grilled chicken or seared salmon.
Our pro tip: Make a batch and eat through the week for fuss free weeknight dinners and office lunches. Or freeze in portions and steam to reheat.
200g Jasberry Rice, uncooked
1 tbsp Olive Oil
140g Carrots, cut into small cubes
1 Red Onion, cut into wedges
2 pinch of Pink Salt
20g Dried Raisins or Currants
20g Almond Flakes, lightly roasted, plus extra to serve
20g Flat Leaf Parsley, coarsely chopped, plus extra to serve
50g Pomegranate Seeds, plus extra to serve
40g Olive Oil
20g Lemon Juice
20g Pomegranate or Cranberry Juice
1 Garlic Clove, crushed
5g Organic Unrefined Sugar
1/4 tsp Pink Salt
1 pinch Black Pepper
Method:Place all vinaigrette ingredients in a screw top jar, cover and shake well. Set aside until ready to use.
Cook Jasberry Rice according to instructions on pack. You should yield 400g of cooked Jasberry Rice. When done, spread onto a tray to cool. Set aside until ready to use.
Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a shallow pan. Once oil is hot enough, sauté carrot cubes and red onion. Keep tossing to prevent onions from burning. Season with a pinch of salt. Once done, set aside to cool.
Place Jasberry Rice in a large bowl. Add vegetables and all remaining ingredients. Toss gently.
Shake vinaigrette again to mix it well. Pour over rice salad. Toss well gently. Place on a serving plate or in a shallow bowl. Top with extra chopped flat leaf parsley, pomegranate seeds and almond flakes. Enjoy!
